Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Are interns entitled to holiday?

Interns are entitled to accrue holiday on a pro rata basis, based on an annual full-time entitlement of 28 days (inclusive of public holidays). Holiday entitlement is therefore equivalent to 12.07% of the hours worked.  Please note that development offices are closed for the bank holiday on Monday 26 August.

It may not be possible to take a holiday during the internship due to staffing requirements, in this instance, you will be paid holiday instead of any accrued but untaken holiday. This will be added to your final monthly payment at the end of the internship.

Where will I be working?

Interns will be placed in teams in either the University Development and Alumni Relations office or the development offices of participating Colleges.

Can I pick the department or College that I want to work in?

No, although your interests and skills will be strongly considered as part of the placement decision and where possible aligned with relevant projects.

What areas of development and alumni relations are offered?

Interns will work in a variety of areas of the University or College development office including prospect and donor research, fundraising, alumni engagement, communications and event planning.

What does a typical week look like?

Interns spend four days each week working in a team in either the University Development and Alumni Relations department or within one of the Cambridge College development offices. The fifth day consists of a class with guest lecturers, including University and College development professionals, leaders in the sector, and philanthropists. The class will also provide opportunities for enhancing participants’ personal and professional skills and working on individual and group projects.

Can I hold another job during the internship?

It is not recommended, as participation requires at least 35 hours each week on the job and in class.

Are there any obligations to work evenings or weekends?

There may be some occasional evening and/or weekend events.

How many internships are available?

We anticipate that we will be able to offer up to 12 placements this year.

Can I work remotely?

No, this is an in-person internship.
