A Collegiate Campaign
The 800th Anniversary Campaign embraces the 31 Colleges as well as the academic departments and institutions, and the great libraries and museums that, together, produce excellence at Cambridge.
It is through the Colleges that undergraduates receive much of the individual teaching that is such a distinctive strength of the Cambridge approach to learning. Rich in artistic, sporting and political stimuli, the Colleges are at the heart of what makes Cambridge special. They house both students and academics, whose interests span the academic spectrum, and provide a unique forum for the exchange and generation of that fundamental intellectual property: ideas.
The Campaign’s goals have therefore been developed in close consultation with the Colleges, and a gift to a College or to a University institution is a gift to the Campaign as a whole.
From the Chairman of the Colleges’ Committee:
“The 800th Anniversary Campaign has been an inspiration to the Cambridge Colleges. Every year since its launch, collegiate fundraising and development have increased appreciably, with the result that 2007-2008 saw a record performance by the Colleges in raising funds towards the Campaign. This success is based both on some exceptionally generous principal gifts, and on increasing levels of support from the broader community of non-resident members: a growing ‘culture of giving’ that will sustain Cambridge’s
unique character as a series of close-knit communities within a great global university.
Increasingly, this Cambridge culture of giving is characterised by donors who are supporting both the Colleges and the academic Departments and Institutions of the University. With the Colleges and the University committed to the same goal – securing and enhancing excellence in teaching and research at Cambridge – we are greatly strengthened by working in tandem. Indeed, the financial and academic future of
the Colleges depends on the University being a world-class institution. The enduring strength of this partnership, and of course partnership with our alumni and supporters, will be central to sustaining the Campaign’s momentum through the current economic environment and beyond.”
